GERMAN GRAND PRIX

Hockenheim

HOCKENHEIMRING
29/07 - 31/07/2016

This year, the 63rd Germany Grand Prix Formula 1, will take place at Hockenheim.

The race track, which is called the Hockenheimring is a high-speed track with tons of character and has been one of the tracks that has been used as a venue for the German Grand Prix since 2007 in alternation with the Nürburgring. The Grand Prix tradition in Germany goes all the way back to 1926, however, Formula 1 racing cars drove at the Nürburgring for the first time in 1951. The Hockenheim debuted in 1970 as a 6,789 km track winding through Baden-Württemberg.

After Niki Lauda's fire accident in 1976 in Nürburg, for safety reasons, the Hockenheimring became the dominant route in Germany.
In 2002, a 60-million-euro redevelopment designed by Hermann Tilke has allowed the track in Hockenheim to become one of the most modern circuits.
The long straightaways and the track duration were previously considered to be nothing special but were modernized and the spectator capacity was increased from 83,000 to 120,000 places.

Danger has always belonged to the spirit of racing, but spectacular accidents at Hockenheimring last took place in 1980 and 1968: Patrick Depailler died after a test drive, and Jim Clark in a Formula 2 race.
